Reviews of the Best Bottom Loading Water Dispensers

Anyone that has had to deal with a traditional water dispenser knows how difficult it is loading the cooler onto them. I mean, you (or the intern) have to grab the cooler and throw it on top. One time I actually dropped the bottle and it exploded

Not my proudest moment.

Anyway, a bottom loading water dispenser solves that problem. You literally just slide the bottle into the bottom of the dispenser. Yes, it really is that easy.

Here are the top five bottom loading water dispensers available on the market. These are great for offices. Some people use them in their homes too. I’m not sure, does anyone use these for their home?

Our Recommendation: Avalon Bottom Loading Water Cooler

Avalon

Alright, first on our list if the Avalon Bottom Loading water dispenser. First, this is made by Avalon as you probably already know. Now, what you might know is that Avalon has a reputation for making great water devices.

Their stand alone bottom loader is no different. This is why it’s our top pick and a highly regarded product on Amazon. In addition to performing well, it also looks great. It has a futuristic stainless steel construction rather than that white plastic that looks straight out of 1996. So if you’re really conscious about how your office looks, then this is the water dispenser. This would look great in an office that is trying to look modern and trending, which helps when attempting to attract the best and brightest talent.

Anyway, the water settings are good as well. This is what they call a bottom loading hot and cold water cooler. You can have hot, cold, or room temperature water. Room temperature water is kind of pointless in my opinion. It wastes water from the bottle, but I know a lot of people like it. Avalon also gets to add it as a feature.

The unit also has lights. They put an indication light on the unit itself that alerts you when it is time to replace the water bottle. This sounds cool, it is, but it’s actually standard practice. The cooler thing they have is a light on the spigot. Filling up a bottle at night has never been easier.

It’s like a beacon of light in a dark cave. For a normal office, this probably isn’t that useful. However, if you work in a dark warehouse or have this dispenser in your home, then this is extremely useful.

One last thing, this has a child safety lock on the hot water dispenser. You don’t have to worry about your child accidentally spilling hot water everywhere.

Dimensions: 45.5 x 16 x 15.2 inches

Weight: 44 pounds

What size bottles to use? 3-5 gallons

  • A modern looking stainless steel design.
  • Child safety lock. No need to worry about children getting hot water everywhere.
  • UL/Energy Star Approved. This means it’s energy efficient.

Cons

  • Can be loud.

Runnerup: Whirlpool Self Cleaning Bottom Loading Dispenser

Whirlpool

Next up on our list is this Whirlpool self-cleaning unit. Self-cleaning is a pretty cool concept and it works surprisingly well.

We like this unit for more than just it’s self-cleaning capabilities though. You also get a unit that is nickel plated stainless steel, which just looks amazing. I mean, this dispenser looks sharp. It’s another one that is practically an essential for any office that wants to give off a modern feel.

Anyway, Whirlpool has been making these type of devices for a very long time. This one is a 5th generation bottom loading dispenser. Naturally, this means they have already fixed any of the big problems that these units first had when released.

For instance, the pump on this one is super strong and sucks up all of the water from the bottle. No more having to deal with half a gallon remaining in the bottle at the end of the week.

The cooling in this unit is also interesting. Water literally passes through an ice block to cool down. No more having to deal with refrigeration lines or anything like that. It’s a pretty neat and efficient way to cool water.

Now, the hot water stays in a reservoir. This means you have a hot water at a moment’s notice. No having to wait for the water to heat up or come out lukewarm. Nope, the water comes out hot almost instantly.

Even better is that this unit has LED notification lights for everything. It kind of looks like a spaceship if we’re being 100% candid. I like it.

An LED indicator light will appear when the self-cleaning is occurring and when the hot and cold water is at a good temperature. Awesome. Oh, you also get an LED indicator when it is time to replace the water bottle underneath the cooler. Like I said, this is basically a spaceship in your office. Fortunately, this won’t fly away.

Finally, you get a decent warranty on this. As of this writing, this warranty is only available if you purchase it from an authorized retailer. No grey market sellers. The Amazon listing should detail who the authorized re seller is that can provide you with the warranty.

Dimensions: 15 x 12.6 x 40.5 inches

Weight: 40 pounds

What size bottles to use? 3-5 gallons

Warranty? 1 year limited if purchased through an authorized retailer. Reil Electronics at the time of writing.

  • LED indicator lights for low water, ideal water temperature, and when self-cleaning is occurring.
  • Warranty when purchased through an authorized reseller.
  • Cold water is cooled by a giant ice cube.
  • Stainless steel with nickel plating looks good.
thumbs-down-icon

Cons

  • More expensive than other units.

NewAir WAT40B

newair wat40b

Right in the middle of the list is the NewAir WAT40B. This unit is great for a more budget friendly customer because it skips some of the fancy features of the other dispensers.

First, this isn’t stainless steel. It isn’t that 1996 plastic either. It’s a sleek looking black plastic, so it still has a fashionable design at a fraction of the cost. Not bad.

Don’t worry. The plastic is BPA free. It’s safe.

Anyway, it’s just your standard water dispenser. It has a hot and cold setting with a child lock. The pump on this one isn’t too loud. Some people still mention that it is too loud though. Can’t please everyone.

Finally, this has the usual LED indicator light that shines when it is time to change the bottle. This is just a solid all around container at a good price without any of the bells and whistles of the other dispensers.

Dimensions: 12.2 x 13.6 x 41 inches

Weight: 35 pounds

What size bottles to use? 5 gallons

Warranty? 1 year. Request through customer service when placing order.

Pros

  • Great price.
  • Black plastic looks great. It also contains no BPA.
  • Child safety lock on the hot button.

Cons

  • Some people say that it is loud.

Hamilton Beach BL-1-4A Bottom Loading Water Cooler

Hamilton Beach

Another one of our favorites. This one offers hot, cold, and room temperature water. I mean, with a unit like this you don’t even need to use your sink. Replacing the water coolers that frequently might get annoying though.

Anyway, this is a plastic and stainless steel unit. The front panel is made of stainless steel, which kind of gives this unit a cyberpunk look to it… at least as cyberpunk as a water dispenser can look. So if you want a cyberpunk water dispenser, then this is your unit.

Other than that it is has the usual child safety lock. Pretty much standard for a water dispenser that gives hot water. It also has a removable drip tray, which makes cleaning so much easier. Believe me.

Finally, you get those nifty little LED indicator lights. One lights up when the hot water or cold water is ready. Another one flashes when for the room temperature water, which I’m not really sure what the point of that is to be quite honest, but it’s cool.

You get a red indicator that light that lights up when it’s time to replace the bottle too. No more having to look and see, which would get annoying with a bottom loader. It doesn’t chirp though.

Dimensions: 14 x 13 x 42 inches

Weight: 22 pounds

What size bottles to use? 3 & 5 gallon bottles

Warranty? 1 year manufacturer.

thumbs-up-icon

Pros

  • Good price.
  • Dispenses hot, cold, and room temperature water.
  • Bunch of LED inidcators.
  • Child safety lock.
  • Cyberpunk look.
  • Doesn’t make a lot of noise.
thumbs-down-icon

Cons

  • Water drips out a few seconds after you stop using it.

Primo Pewter 3

Primo Pewter 3

Rounding out our list is the Primo Pewter 3. This unit is black plastic, so no need to worry about the white plastic 1996 look. The plastic does not have any BPA either.

This is another 3 spout dispenser. As mentioned earlier, a hot and cold bottom loading water dispenser is great. However, the tap water might have tendency to make you run out of water a little faster than you would like. This is just something to consider before you go out and purchase one of these.

Now, you get a 4 LED lights. Again, you have the whole spaceship design going on with this unit. I think it looks good, but some people might not enjoy the LED.

All I have to say is, good luck finding a bottom loading water dispenser that does not have a bunch of LED lights. First, you need one to tell you when to change the bottle. Trust me, you don’t want to have to constantly look underneath and see when it runs low. The added benefit of knowing when the water is ready is also good. No more doing a quick drop of water to determine the temperature. It wastes water and also can make a mess.

Anyway, we like that this has a removable stainless steel drip tray. It can even be put in the dishwasher, so you don’t even have to do dishes.

Finally, this product comes with a one year limited warranty from the manufacturer. Sweet.

Dimensions: 14.2 x 12.2 x 40.9 inches

Weight: 17 pounds

What size bottles to use? 5 gallons

Warranty? 1 year warranty. Send in the card when you purchase it.

thumbs-up-icon

Pros

  • Black BPA-free plastic.
  • Cold, hot, and room temperature water can be dispensed.
  • Stainless steel water reservoirs.
  • Energy Star rated, so it’s energy efficient.
  • The unit is actually quiet.
thumbs-down-icon

Cons

  • The pumps went out early on some models. This problem was due to a bad manufacturing run in 2014 and has been fixed in 2018.

Benefits of a Bottom Loading Water Dispenser

A bottom loading water dispenser has a few distinct advantages over other kinds of water dispensers. We’ll just list these in a quick list format to make things easier for you.

  • Easy to Load – The first major advantage that everyone thinks of is how easy these things are to load. You don’t have to toss a big water cooler on top of the unit. This works great for elderly people. It’s also great for people like me that are traumatized by dropping a water cooler. Either way, this is by far the best and most convenient feature.
  • Looks Better than a Top Loader – A top loading dispenser has the big water cooler at the top. This kind of looks ugly in my opinion. I mean, you have a massive water cooler sitting at the top of a plastic box. It just doesn’t look nearly as good as the smooth and sleek design that you see on a bottom loader.

Use & Maintenance of a Bottom Loading Water Cooler

Use & Maintenance

So, using these things is not too difficult. It’s just a standard water cooler. Put the cup underneath the dispenser and press the button, easy.

The harder part is cleaning these units. Again, this isn’t too difficult and doesn’t require any special tools. Just follow these steps.

  • Unplug the unit
  • Disconnect the bottle.
  • Drain the water from both sides.
  • Put a mixture of soap and water in a bottle.
  • Attach this bottle of soap to the dispenser.
  • Let it sit for about an hour. This will suck up some of the water.
  • Remove the soap bottle.
  • Add a bottle with clean water.
  • Flush the until all of the soap is gone.

Final Verdict

Our choice and recommendation is the Whirlpool Self Cleaning Bottom Loading Water Dispenser. This unit is expensive, I know. However, it is from a brand that you can trust and it’s self-cleaning. How awesome is that?

You don’t have to worry about cleaning your water cooler. I mean, you still have to clean it. You just don’t have to clean the spigot as frequently. It also looks nice because it’s stainless steel. All in all, this is the best one on the list. We didn’t put it higher because the higher price can scare of some consumers, but if you’re willing to spend some extra money, then purchase this unit. You won’t have to worry about it breaking in 5 months or it randomly deciding to leak and flooding your home.
