Having clean water is very important to ensuring that you drink the most amount of water possible as it helps ensure a healthy lifestyle. It also takes out a lot of the nasty contaminants that frequently appear in water.
Yes, even American tap water is known to have a wide range of nasty stuff in it.
This makes a system essential for your home. We have already discussed the top countertop water systems and the best reverse osmosis systems. In both articles we determined that the Zip Countertop Reverse Osmosis system makes an excellent choice.
Today we’re going to review this filtration system with more detail than the previously mentioned articles.
Time to discuss the top features of one of these systems. We already recommended, but you should know what you’re buying.
One of the biggest advantages of the Puricom system is that it requires absolutely no installation. You literally just set it on your countertop and plug it in. This is an easy to install reverse osmosis system. Something that is not common on the RO marketplace.
As many of you already know, reverse osmosis systems have a reputation for wasting water. A lot of water.
I’m talking about 4 gallons of water is wasted for every 1 gallon produced. That is a whole lot of water.
The Puricom Zip wastes way less water than the competitors. It still wastes water, don’t misinterpret that, it just wastes much less. In fact, it has a 1:1 ratio. This means that it wastes 1 gallon of water for every gallon of water that it filters. This is a big improvement. The industry average is 4:1.
Efficiency stretches beyond just the amount of water wasted. It also applies to the amount of electricity that this system uses. It uses 24 watts of power, which is actually less than your typical 60 watt lightbulb. So it isn’t expensive to operate from an electricity standpoint. Just from a water perspective, but even then the water wasted is not that bad.
4 Stage Filtration
You also get 4 stages of filtration with this filter. Those 4 stages really help with eliminating the contaminants and extending the life of the filter.
The first stage is a five micron sediment filter. This is also known as a pre-filter and its purpose is to remove as much big sediment as possible, which extends the filter life. These filters are also much cheaper and easier to replace than a reverse osmosis membrane.
Next is the activated carbon filter. Activated carbon filters water through a process known as adsorption. In other words, the rough surface of the carbon will attract chlorine, sediment, and other contaminants.
The third stage is the reverse osmosis (RO) membrane. We’ve already covered how these systems work. I will say that these remove just about everything from water. Chemicals, total dissolved solids, chlorine, sediment, rust, bacteria, and even fluoride.
The final stage isn’t so much of a filtration system. It’s actually a process that adds minerals back into the water and makes it more alkaline. Specifically, this step adds calcium and magnesium back into your water. Don’t worry, those are both good for you.
Another important feature that Puricom included with the Zip is an excellent filter life. You should replace the pre-filter, carbon block filter, and mineralizer about once a year. This depends on how much water you use.
The Zip will have a red indicator light that blinks when it is time to replace it though. Alternatively, if you notice lower water pressure, then you should change out the three filters.
The RO membrane only needs to be changed out once every 2 to 4 years. Again, this just varies on how frequently you use it and the contaminants in your tap water. More frequent use, or dirtier tap water, will mean that you have to change the membrane more often.
This feature is less important than the other points mentioned. However, a good looking filter is extremely important.
Fortunately, Puricom made sure to build a beautiful countertop reverse osmosis system. It has that futuristic look to it because of the black and blue color. Mix that in with some silver colored plastic and you have a great looking unit.
Honestly, you don’t want a filter that sits on your countertop made out of white plastic. It just won’t match the look of a modern kitchen. If you don’t have a modern, then it isn’t as important, I guess.
